FEELINGS THERMOMETER VISUAL COMMUNICATION CARD

The Feelings Thermometer is an interactive visual tool designed to help participants or clients identify and express their emotions. It assists in distinguishing between small, medium, and large feelings, making it especially useful for those who may not use words to communicate. The card easily clips onto an instructor's belt or clothing, providing a convenient way for regular emotional check-ins during lessons.

A Little Background:

This card was developed for an AR instructor working with a longtime rider who uses an AAC device (iPad) as their primary form of communication. After a long break and transitioning back to mounted lessons with a new, larger horse, the rider faced some emotional challenges. Since the AAC device remains with the parent during lessons—a decision made collaboratively between the program and the family—the instructor needed a more nuanced tool for regular check-ins beyond a simple yes or no response. The Feelings Thermometer card, kept in the instructor’s pocket or clipped onto their belt, provides a practical solution to assess and reassess emotions effectively during lessons.
